Welcome to State Disability and Information Centre- SWABHIMAN

The need for an independent organization capable of providing information relating to any aspect of disABILITY was the subject of discussion to this that a Disability Information & Resource Centre, SWABHIMAN, came up. SWABHIMAN believes that a healthy society must be an inclusive society.The Government's commitment to secure comprehensive and enforceable civil rights for disabled people is a necessary part of creating that inclusive society. To underline the fact that persons with disability are also productive element and equal partners in society SWABHIMAN was born on 1st of December 2001. Subsequently it evolved become the lead organization is all about working towards self-determination, equal opportunities and self-respect of the disABLED people. Persons with disability are equal partners in all respects and all fields.     

Our Mission

To strengthen the disability movement through research, training, advocacy, and public education for full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in the country's mainstream.

We have a state level office and also work with like minded partners and member organisations through networking. Currently, we are a state level nodal organisation with a consortium of organisations of Persons With Disabilities (Orissa State Disability Network-OSDN). Our role is to provide a forum for sharing experiences and exchange of information. We facilitate member organisation to work together on common issues affecting persons with disabilities in the state.

  • Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, the honorary Chief Executive of Swabhiman gave Training to five probational I.A.S. officer on the issues and challanges of disability at gopabandhu academy of administration on 18/7/2014
  • On 30/05/2014 Swabhiman organized a Press Meet to share the findings of a Reserach on "Disability Rights Budget Analysis". 
  • On 19/05/2014 Swabhiman Volunteers enacted a Street Play at Master Canteen Square highlighting the issues faced by Persons with disabilities in their day to day life. 
  • On 16/04/2014 Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, the honorary Chief Executive of Swabhiman and Project Officer Asit Kumar Behera met His Excellency, Dr. S.C.Jamir, Governor of Odisha in Rajbhawan Bhubaneswar. Discussion was held on higher education scenario in Odisha for persons with disabilities. His Excellency had invited them to a meeting with vice chancellors and officials of higher education department to share their findings and suggest way forward so that students with disabilities can get proper education in the state.
  • On 09/04/2014 Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, the honorary Chief Executive of Swabhiman and Project Officer Asit Kumar Behera met Ms. Arti Ahuja, commissioner-cum-Secretary, Women and Child Development department and Sri Jugal Kishor Mohapatra, Chief Secretary of Odisha, in the latter’s office. Among the issues discussed were 3% budget allocation by all departments for disability, modification of ICT and Tourism policies to incorporate the concerns of persons with disabilities, incorporation of accessibility features in government websites, education of CWSN, accessibility in colleges and universities, changes in procurement policy and directives to BDA for universal design features in all public building plans.
  • On 26/03/2014 Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, the honorary Chief Executive of Swabhiman and Project Officer Asit Kumar Behera met Sri Ashok Tripathy, the Director General, Training Coordination, of Gopabandhu Academy of Administration, in Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar. A discussion was held on incorporating disability related issues in the various training programs being conducted by the academy. Swabhiman is also preparing a training module for the IAS/OAS trainees to orient them on all aspects of disability issues relevant from administrative point of view.
  • As political right is not being extended to persons with disabilities Swabhiman organized an interface between political representatives and persons with disabilities on 4th March 2014 at CYSD. A charter of demands was presented to the leaders from various political parties. BJD was represented by Amar Sathpathy, BJP was represented by Prabhati Parida, CPI (M) was represented by Suresh Panigrahi, Odisha Jan Morcha by Mihir Mohanty and AAP by Nishilkant Mohapatra. All parties committed to ensure basic rights to persons with disabilities, their political participation and including their demands in their party manifesto.
