Persons with disabilities make up an estimated 2.9% (12.44 lakhs) of the population of Odisha. About 80 per cent are of working age. The right of PwDs to decent work, however, is frequently denied. Persons with disabilities, particularly women with disabilities, face enormous attitudinal, physical and informational barriers to equal opportunities in the world of work.
Apart from these, persons with disability are often not aware of the jobs available and nor are they prepared with the right education, skill sets or attitude. Most know little about the technical and other aids or methods they could use at the workplace to carry out a wide range of tasks and responsibilities. Swabhiman trains and counsels persons with disability and prepares them to join the mainstream workforce as confident individuals.
Swabhiman links up youth with various training programs, provides internship at various places post-training, sensitizes employers and helps in placement. To build awareness and understanding of issues faced by persons with disabilities, we address networking, training and information sharing. We also encourage the employers for provision of reasonable accommodations—modifications or adjustments to a job or the work environment to assure that a qualified individual with a disability has rights and privileges in employment equal to those of employees without disabilities—to create an adaptable work environment.
Swabhiman also looks at self-employment, coordinating loans melas, setting up SHG groups and organizing job fairs. We continue supporting them by providing market linkage, organizing sharing platformings and providing them relevant information.
